Visitors to the Island State of Tasmania will enjoy the learning experience you find at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston. This is Australia’s largest regional gallery. It is located just north of the city central business district, only a few minutes’ walk. The museum is known in Australia for its collections of Australian colonial art, decorative arts and design, history pieces and natural sciences. There are two sites for the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the first is Royal Park and the second Inveresk.

The Royal Park site was purpose built in 1891 and is one of Australia’s oldest museum buildings. It is currently undergoing a refurbishment and is expected to reopen in late 2010. The site at Inveresk was opened in 2001 and was once the Launceston Railway Workshops. This original structure has been incorporated with a contemporary design and features galleries and exhibition spaces. The Inveresk site also features Phenomena Factory. This is one of the most exciting interactive science centers in Australia. It provides children and adults with hands on learning entertainment. The Inveresk site will also have the newly upgraded Launceston Planetarium and Space Gallery; this is to be relocated from the original Royal Park site.

The Cressy Trout Expo dates have been moved. The Trout Expo will now be held over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of October. You will still find all the great stalls and entertainment, but hopefully the weather will be better. The Cressy Trout Expo is still going to be held in the ground of the Cressy District High School. The School can be found on Main Street, which is the main street of the township. Cressy itself is a small rural community and the Trout Expo is a great community event.

Last year saw trout cooking demonstrations become a popular attraction of the Expo. The school children provide great entertainment with a fashion show and many of their works on display and some for sale. There are quite a number of displays including displays from fishing clubs and other sporting groups. There are shops with fishing equipment for sale and clothing too. Of course there are great food stalls to enjoy as well.

The fishing competition is held at Brumby’s creek. You register at the Cressy District High School and then take the shuttle bus a few minutes down the road to creek. The fishing competition takes place over the entire weekend by the stalls and displays will only be available on the Saturday. Make sure you register so that if you catch the tagged trout you can win the prize money.

Cressy is about twenty minutes from the Launceston Airport, just past Longford. The only real way to travel there is by car. Launceston Car Rental can help you find the kind of vehicle you want to holiday in while in Tasmania. You will find the best car rental companies and the most competitive prices on the Launceston Car Rental website.

Two exceptional historical attractions just outside of Launceston are th Woolmers Estate and Entally Estate. Woolmers Estate is home to the National Rose Garden and is open from 9am to 5pm daily. A guided tour of Woolmers Estate takes you the personal collections and possessions of Thomas Archer I through to Thomas Archer VI and the six generations that had lived there. The main homestead was built in 1817 by Thomas Archer I. Guided tours of the Estate run regularly from 10am in summer months and 11am in the winter. Tours take around 45 minutes, or you are welcome to wander the grounds yourself to view what was once a working farm. Explore the grounds to find many convict built outbuildings including the Wool and apple packing sheds, coach house, stables and blacksmith, and the Settlers Cottages Accommodation. Accommmodation prices range from $130 to $180AUD per couple per night. There are seven self contained accommodation sites located on the Estate

Entally Estate is only 15 minutes drive from Launceston, and is one of Tasmania’s heritage icons, set within grounds that are more like grand park than someone’s garden. The gardens were established over 150 years ago, and the original lay out has been retained. The grounds include one of Australia’s oldest cricket grounds. Mary Reibey a former convict was granted 300 acres of land and it was on this land in 1819 that her eldest son Thomas Haydock Reibey settled and built his homestead. The grounds are managed by Gunns Limited and are open seven days a week. Outbuildings that you will find while wandering the magnificent grounds are stables, chapel, coach house and conservatory. The landowners muster from 1819 showed that Thomas Haydock Reibey owned five horses, 92 head of cattle and 600 head of sheep, and that there were 2430 acres of pasture and 200 acres of wheat. Entally Estate was reserved as an historic site in December 1948, and since then the homestead and grounds have been involved in a continuing restoration program. The homestead includes lavish furnishings, including a great deal of cedar furniture, a 18th Century mahogany mirror and a Georgian chandelier. There are a great number of artworks in the homestead including works by John Glover, a famous Tasmanian Artist. Pick up your rental car from the Launceston Airport using launcestoncarrental.com.au. Choose from the major car rental companies on this site all competing for your custom by offering their best deals.

Traveling through the Tamar Valley region in Tasmania we discovered Seahorse World at Beauty Point. What a great discovery Seahorse World was. It focuses on breeding and conserving Seahorses. There is a tank called the Cave of the Seahorse that contains many different species of seahorse. We were able to look at how a seahorse farm works, which was very interesting in itself. There is also touch pool where you are able to be really hands on with some of the sea creatures. This is an award winning attraction to the north of Tasmania and is an easy morning drive from Launceston.

This facility has been designed to be easily accessible to everyone. For an impressive selection of locally made Tasmanian products to sample look into the Seahorse World souvenir and gift shop for beautiful and sometimes unique giftware. This is a reasonably priced attraction tool. Family passes for two adults and up to three children is $50 AUD, and all children under three have free entry to Seahorse World.

Looking for Launceston car rental?

When I travel to Launceston I can remember the old days when dad took us on a camping trip into the forest by the flowing river waters so that we could fish for trout. Back then campi9ng was a lot different to what it is today because there are so many things that I would not leave home without that we never had back then. The insect repellant is one thing that I can remember going without although there was repellant back then only we were not allowed to use it. We also only had the camp fire to keep us warm, cook our meals and make lights but now there is something different for each of those like the kerosene heaters, the cook top gas stove and our torches for light.

Now days the kids use state of the art fishing gear to lure the trout in but sixty years ago we had only a lure on a branch which was enough to catch us our days fill. The tents have improved too and are now rain proof and able to keep the bugs out but sleeping under the stars on a warm night is still appealing to me. In this modern era my sons hire a car to travel around in when we uses to come to Launceston for a camping trip we would borrow my uncles van or paddle the boat to the camping spot. The Launceston car rental agents make it much easier to travel so now we can look for different spots to camp even though we have never found one as good as the first.

Discovering all the fun things to do in Tasmania is all a part of the traveling experience for everyone that likes to sight see and do tours of a place. Launceston is one city that has plenty of appeal for tourists because it is the center of the Tasmanian tourist industry. The trout fishing farms have taken off over the last few years and put a lot of work into attracting tourist by upgrading their facilities and advertising their whereabouts. Personally I like to go trout fishing because it is a peaceful way to spend the day and if you are allowed to keep some of the fish they taste absolutely magnificent.

The Queen Victoria Museum is another attraction that will keep you busy and it is not very far from Launceston city. The museum holds many artifacts from the history of the colonization of Tasmania and helps to explain the role this island had in the beginning of the settlement of Australia. If you like native wildlife then the Ben Lomond national park will be something that you don’t want to miss. See if you can spot the differences between the mainland Australian wildlife and what Tasmania has to offer.

Because Tasmania is a big island with many places to go and things to see you should invest in a hire car to get you around. Launceston car rental agents have good quality cars at reasonable prices and their friendly service makes dealing with them very pleasant.
