Launceston is located in the northern part of the state of Tasmania, Australia. It has a population of just over 100,000 and is the second largest city within Tasmania, just below the capital, Hobart. It is one of Australia’s largest cities with an extensive history as it was founded in 1806. There are many historic buildings and sites in place. The city, Launceston, was named after a town in the United Kingdom, Launceston, Cornwall. Launceston has been able to claim many firsts including the first city to use an anesthetic in the Southern hemisphere, first Australian city to utilize hydroelectricity, and the first Australian city to install and use underground sewers. Launceston has an overall mild climate that allows for four completely distinct seasons.
Launceston is rich in culture with many art and sport options. It is home to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery that was created in 1891 and now the largest museum in Australia. The city also has a Tramway Museum and the oldest bookshop, A.W. Birchall & Sons. Launceston also hosts a casino, golf course, and aquatic center. The city also hosts three Gone South music festivals as well as the MS Fest each year. Popular sports in Launceston, Tasmania include cricket, Australian Rules Football, racing, basketball, and hockey.
