Visitors to the Island State of Tasmania will enjoy the learning experience you find at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston. This is Australia’s largest regional gallery. It is located just north of the city central business district, only a few minutes’ walk. The museum is known in Australia for its collections of Australian colonial art, decorative arts and design, history pieces and natural sciences. There are two sites for the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the first is Royal Park and the second Inveresk.
The Royal Park site was purpose built in 1891 and is one of Australia’s oldest museum buildings. It is currently undergoing a refurbishment and is expected to reopen in late 2010. The site at Inveresk was opened in 2001 and was once the Launceston Railway Workshops. This original structure has been incorporated with a contemporary design and features galleries and exhibition spaces. The Inveresk site also features Phenomena Factory. This is one of the most exciting interactive science centers in Australia. It provides children and adults with hands on learning entertainment. The Inveresk site will also have the newly upgraded Launceston Planetarium and Space Gallery; this is to be relocated from the original Royal Park site.
